Belgium strengthens the rules of family reunification: Vooruit supports the plan with reservations

Main information

  • Vooruit supports the project of the Minister of Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuyt (N-VA) to strengthen the rules in terms of family reunification.

Anneleen Van Bossuyt, Minister of Asylum and Migration (N-VA), managed to obtain the support of Vooruit, his left-wing coalition partner, for her plan aimed at hardening the conditions for family reunification. Inquiétudes de Vooruit

If the Vooruit largely soothes its concerns concerning the stricter measures, certain technical-legal questions remain. They expect a legal opinion on these questions. The first point concerns the income required for the individual already residing in Belgium, namely “sufficient means of subsistence, stable and regular”.

Van Bossuyt fixes this threshold at 110 percent of the guaranteed minimum monthly income, with an increase of 10 percent per additional member of the family joining Belgium. In the case of a refugee seeking to join his spouse and two children, this translates into a monthly net income required of 2,745 euros. MIGRATIENTRUM Myria describes this requirement as an unrealistic “.
