With the collaboration of the Yougov Market Studies Institute, La Poste carried out a survey on electronic voting with some 2000 people. According to the results published on Monday, a majority of those questioned would decide in favor of the introduction of electronic voting. Which would be added to the voting by correspondence or by the ballot boxes.

78% of those questioned would like to be able to vote online. The main advantages of electronic voting advanced by those questioned are better access for the Swiss from abroad (77%), a simpler voting process (73%) and higher participation (72%).

At the same time, there are concerns: “43% fear that the secrecy of the vote will be threatened and we wonder about possible manipulations.” Almost two thirds (64%) believe that La Poste is able to offer a secure electronic voting solution.

“La Poste intends to further strengthen confidence,” she wrote in her press release. This is why she has had her system controlled continuously since 2021. A new security test begins this Monday, July 28: specialists attack the electronic voting system and try to hack it to detect flaws. The test takes place until August 24 ”.

250,000 francs of reward to hacker

The regular “intrusion test” constitutes a central element of this control, explains La Poste. Participating people can simulate the entire voting process and try to get into the electronic ballot box. A reward up to 250,000 francs as much as possible is the key.

The three fastest hackers and hackers will each receive 3000 additional francs. However, since the introduction of the new electronic voting system of La Poste in June 2023, no incident jeopardizing the safety of the electronic urn has been deplored.

Today, the postal electronic voting system is used in the cantons of Basel-Ville, Graubünden, Saint-Gall and Thurgovia the cantons of Geneva and Lucerne plan to launch the operation at the next year.

Further information on the theme of electronic voting is available on the Confederation site and on the cantons site.
