BHP pilots a global steel consortium to study Asian carbon -catching poles

BHP, the world’s leading mining group, takes the lead of an international steel consortium in steel to explore the capture, use and carbon storage opportunities (CCUS) across Asia, the Hatch project manager announced on Monday.

This group, composed of Nippon Steel India ArcelorMittal, JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel, Chevron Corp and Mitsui & Co, will assess the implementation of the CCUS in so -called “difficult to decarbonate” sectors, such as the steel.

The prefeisability study, provided for a year, will focus on the development potential of large -scale projects in Asia, likely to reuse or store carbon dioxide captured.

Although carbon capture technologies are relatively mature, they come up against obstacles in terms of costs and regulation on many Asian markets.

The consortium will analyze how shared infrastructure could reduce costs, aggregate sufficient volumes of carbon dioxide for storage or reuse, and distribute the risks between partner companies.

“By taking advantage of the knowledge and resources shared with our partners, we invest in the support of innovative solutions, such as the potential of the CCUS, which we consider as an essential component of the decarbonation of sectors that are difficult to transform, such as the steel industry,” said Ben Ellis, vice-president of sustainable development at BHP.

The study should end at the end of 2026 and its conclusions will be made public.
