Nicous d’Andre Spring died following a “physical intervention” of correctional agents on December 24, 2022, at the Montreal detention establishment (EDM), also called Bordeaux Prison.
According to information obtained by The press At the time, the young black man would have started to resist correctional agents following an intervention by the latter. The agents would first have covered his head with an anti-crachat mask and then used Cayenne pepper for the first time against him, to try to master it.
They would then have placed it in a decontamination shower in which the detainee would have started to struggle again. Nicous d’Andre Spring would have been sprayed with Cayenne pepper again and it was by opening the shower door that the correctional agents realized that the inmate no longer seemed to breathe. He would then have been dragged on his stomach towards a cell before the nurses were called and started resuscitation maneuvers.
According to several correctional agents who had to write event reports, Sébastien Bossé was responsible for the intervention that day. He would have ordered in particular to spray the prisoner of cayenne pepper and place him in the shower, summoned by correctional agents who would not have agreed with the course of the intervention to leave the premises, and demanded that the detainee be then brought back to the cell.
A security guard and the chief of unit involved in the intervention were suspended following the death of the detainee.
Agents have opposed certain acts, which the chief of unit involved has done, according to contemporary relationships of events.
