It is the third French telecom operator hacked in less than a year. Bouygues Telecom announced, in the evening of Wednesday, August 6, to have “Been the victim of a cyber attack”misadventure that had known its competitors SFR and Free (the operator held by Xavier Niel, shareholder on an individual basis of Monde), respectively in September and October 2024.
According to the first information communicated by the bouygues group subsidiary, the pirates had access “To certain personal data of 6.4 million customer accounts”or approximately a quarter of its subscriber park (23.7 million to June 30, fixed and mobile combined). It is more than the 3.6 million customers concerned by the SFR attack but much less than the 19 million free.
Bouygues Telecom said it had detected cyber attack on Monday August 4. “The technical teams have set up actions as soon as possible to end this attack and taken additional measures necessary to strengthen the security of the information system. The situation was resolved as soon as possible and all the necessary additional measures have been implemented ”adds the company. Customers whose data has been stolen have been or will be warned by e-mail or SMS.
Once in the operator’s computer system, the pirates have managed to seize a lot of information: contact details, contractual elements, civil status or company data in the case of professional customers and banking identifier numbers (IBAN). “Bank card numbers and passwords of your Bouygues Telecom accounts are not impacted”assures the group.
“False advisers”
In a Internet page devoted to this incident, the operator however warns its customers of financial risks. “By using your data, a fraudster can pretend to be Bouygues Telecom or another company (bank, insurance, etc.) and try, for example, to obtain additional information such as your bank card number or your identifiers and passwords”explains the company.
