By -election: animated radio debate in the district of Arthabaska

While the Government of Quebec Press Ottawa to give him immigration powers, the conservative candidate Éric Duhaime suggested that we rather let the regions determine who comes to their homes, during a radio debate on Monday.

This proposal was then welcomed by the candidate of Québec Solidaire (QS) Pascale Fortin and the candidate of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) Keven Brasseur. “Each region should be able to determine the number of foreign workers,” said Duhaime.

Mme Fortin then said he was “a little agreement with Mr. Duhaime”, and Mr. Brasseur added that “everyone” agreed “to” regionalize “.

These three candidates as well as Alex Boissonneault (Parti Québécois) and Chantal Marchand (Liberal Party of Quebec) took part Monday noon in the first debate of the campaign of the by-election in Arthabaska-l’Arable, on the waves of stations O 97,3 and Viva 101.9.

Immigration is at the forefront of the Parti Québécois proposals. “We must decrease to 35,000” immigration thresholds and “reduce the number of temporary immigrants”, repeated the PQ candidate.

Mr. Boissonneault has brought this theme several times. This earned him the reproaches of Mr. Duhaime, who accused him of “dividing the Quebecers”, and of the candidate of QS, who found “insulting” that he “blame” immigrants for the rent prices. It is rather necessary to look at the side of “speculation” and real estate developers abroad who “raise the price of housing”, she said.

Less categorical, the liberal candidate argued that the problem is that the CAQ had “improvised” and made a bad planning in this case. An assertion that earned him group attacks on his new chef, Pablo Rodriguez. “It was Justin Trudeau’s right -hand man,” said Alex Boissonneault.

More discreet than the others, the candidate of the CAQ, Mr. Brasseur, had to defend the wave of cancellations of francization courses of 2024. In housing, he suggested as a solution the holding of a large regional summit.

Carbon tax, “it doesn’t exist”

In health, the Parti Québécois proposal to create a specific CISSS in Center-du-Québec was not much criticized despite the fact that the CAQ had proposed the same thing in 2018 before putting the idea aside.

Éric Duhaime, however, had all stripes attack when he advocated a greater opening to the private sector.

A dynamic that has happened when he called for the cancellation of the carbon tax. “You know that there is no carbon tax in Quebec, huh?” It doesn’t exist, ”said Alex Boissonneault.

Recall that this tax, which has been abolished elsewhere in Canada in the last months, has never applied itself in Quebec, where another regime applies, the carbon market.

The by -election will take place on August 11. Elections Quebec announced on Saturday that a total of ten people had applied to the post of deputy in Arthabaska. For the debate, the organizers had favored aspiring whose political party had collected at least 10 % of votes in the 2022 elections.
