Canada and Manitoba in support of breeders

As part of its Agri-Protection program, a company risk management program that allows Manitoba farmers to protect themselves from production and quality losses caused by natural disasters, the Manitoba Agricultural Services Company (MASC) will allow breeders to have more liquidity to buy food for cattle.

In addition, Agri-Protection is a program whose costs are shared between the federal government, the provincial government and the producer.

Governments also announce modifications for producers benefiting from agri-protection coverage for fodder crops and pastures:

Postponement of the deduction of bonuses on payments paid for compensation requests presented under fodder culture insurance before October 1, 2025;

Partial payment of compensation for the insurance of fodder crops and the pasture day insurance program, as far as possible;

Possibility for cattle to graze in fodder crops provided after the first cut without impact on the calculation of allowances.

“The changes to the program will allow Manitoba producers to obtain the requested compensation more quickly in order to access other sources of food for their animals as quickly as possible,” said Heath Macdonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri -food.

“As pastures dry out and sources of food for livestock are rare, it is important to give producers the resources they need to preserve their herds,” added Ron Kostyshyn, Minister of Agriculture of Manitoba.

Federal data specifies that Manitoba has a high participation rate in the Agri-Protection program, which covers more than 90 % of its annual cultivated area and more than 7,400 of its farms.
