Canada will advance “timely” towards the recognition of Palestine as a state, says Mark Carney

Ottawa is obviously not yet ready to recognize Palestine as a country, just like France. Federal Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that his government is crossing “all the appropriate stages” towards this objective.

“Canada supports a Palestinian, free and viable state, which cohabits peace and security side by side with the Israeli State. And we take all the necessary steps in order to have a Palestinian state like this, ”said Carney on Monday morning.

The Prime Minister was careful not to imitate the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who officially announced Thursday evening that his country would recognize Palestine as an independent state next September. Mark Carney said in English that he would take steps in this sense “at the right time”.

Several deputies elected by his side under the liberal banner this spring ask him to announce the same recognition of a Palestinian state, as wishes to the new Democratic Party (NPD).

The decision of France last week has raised the anger of Israel, which accuses Paris of “rewarding terror”, almost two years after the attacks of October 7, 2023 perpetrated in this country by Hamas.

The United States has closed the door to such recognition. For its part, Canada officially supports the principle of a “two-state solution”, that is to say the peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine.

With the international community

Mark Carney reiterated Monday that it poses as a condition that Hamas plays “no role” in a possible independent Palestine, which would be created thanks to collaboration work of the international community.

Ottawa has also been asking for a cease-fire in Gaza since December 2023. Since then, malnutrition has reached “alarming levels”, according to the United Nations.

Carney praised the recent recovery on humanitarian aid from Egypt on Monday. “The humanitarian situation in Gaza […] is so serious, so serious [que] What is absolutely essential is the immediate supply […] Humanitarian aid for the people, “he said.

He was questioned on Monday on this subject by journalists on the sidelines of an announcement to the Prince Edward Island, where he promises to reduce the price of the Pont de la Confederation’s toll, which links the smallest province of the country to New Brunswick, as well as the Atlantic Traversies Prize.

At the same time, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand was going to New York to participate in the United Nations International High Level Conference for the Pacific Regulation of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two -state solution. The meeting, co -chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, must take place until Wednesday.

No sanctions in Israel for Gaza

International amnesty insists that the international community will take the opportunity in order to put pressure on Israel “so that it ends the genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza”.

For the past year, the term “genocide” has been used by more and more elected officials in the Canadian Parliament to qualify the actions of Israel in Gaza.

“The Palestinian people undergo a genocide, famine, occupation, demolition of their houses and incessant violence,” describes the NPD in a statement that urges Prime Minister Mark Carney to make the same “good political and moral choice” as the French president, recognizing the state of Palestine.

In May, Canada joined France and the United Kingdom to demand that the army of Israel allow humanitarian aid in Gaza, under the threat of “targeted sanctions”.

Israel was never directly sanctioned by Canada, but some far -right ministers from the Netanyahu government were in June for a completely different case, illegal colonization of the West Bank.

The ex-first minister of the country Justin Trudeau had opened the door in 2024 to the creation of a Palestinian state which would not be negotiated with Israel.
