“The sentences that have been pronounced are exemplary in my eyes,” said at a press conference Trinidad Steinert, the regional prosecutor in Tarapaca, a city in northern Chile.

The 12 individuals were convicted of murder, kidnapping and trafficking in human beings. It is the second heavier condemnation pronounced by the Chilean justice against members of the Gang Tren of Aragua.

Among the convicts are at least 11 Venezuelans and a man with a Colombian identity card, but who could also be Venezuelan, according to the prosecution.

One of the leaders of Tren of Aragua in Chile was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday and four leaders to almost similar sentences for kidnapping, association of criminals and trafficking in human beings.

Seven other gang members were sentenced to sentences ranging from 2 to 22 years’ imprisonment.

In March, the Chilean justice had already condemned 34 members of the Gang Tren of Aragua to sentences up to life imprisonment.

Originally from Venezuela, the Tren of Aragua is a criminal organization that engages in extortion, murders, drug trafficking and human beings, in several countries in Latin America.

In February, the United States has appointed several Latin American cartels as “global terrorist” organizations, including the Tren of Aragua.
