Beijing and Washington complete their third cycle of negotiations in Stockholm. They were “frank, in -depth and constructive”, according to the Chinese representative with international trade.
The United States and China will “continue to work” in favor of an extension of the commercial truce which has made it possible to suspend a large part of the prohibitive customs surcharges which they imposed each other, Chinese representative on international trade said on Tuesday, quoted by the official news agency Xinhua.
Li Chenggang made these remarks after a third cycle of Sino-American negotiations which ended the same day in Stockholm and which he described as “frank, in-depth and constructive”.
The discussions aimed, among other things, to prolong the 90 -day break negotiated in May in Geneva and running until August 12, which had ended reprisals on both sides of the Pacific who cause prohibitive surcharge.
This had made it possible to reduce customs duties to American and Chinese products, at 125% and 145% respectively, at a more modest level of 10% and 30%, which are added to those already existing, on a certain number of products, before the return of Donald Trump to the White House in late January.
The United States and China- represented respectively by the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the Deputy Prime Minister He Lifeng- have exchanged their views on the main economic and commercial questions, and intend to maintain close communication, said Li Chenggang, quoted by Xinhua.
The talks in Sweden took place at the start of a decisive week for the trade policy of President Donald Trump, the customs duties applied to most of the main business partners in the United States to know a sudden increase on 1is august.
