An important landslide occurred on Saturday near the Grande Dixence (VS). Its dam is now inaccessible by road. Steering measures were taken by the municipality of Hérémence and the State of Valais.
About 5,000 cubic meters of rock have detached from the cliff overlooking the site, causing the preventive closure of the zip line as well as part of the coronation of the dam, specify the municipal authorities in a statement released on Wednesday.
A resurgence of geological activity has been observed in recent days, encouraging the authorities to strengthen public protection measures.
In consultation with the cantonal mobility service, the cantonal route leading from Merébé to the Big Dixence dam is now closed until further notice, including for cyclists and pedestrians.
“Active surveillance is underway, in order to follow the evolution of the situation. A new risk assessment will be carried out in the coming days to determine the next steps,” said the municipality.
