Cross -cutters in eastern Canada: reduced and end prices of surcharge on August 1 – Portal of the Madeleine Islands

Good news for maritime travelers: from 1is August, the rates of the crossings served by companies receiving federal aid will be reduced by half. This measure, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney, includes the ferry in particular Madeleine II of the CTMA, which ensures the vital link between Cap-aux-Meules, in the islands-of-the-Madeleine, and mouse, at the Prince Edward Island.

An essential line for Madelinots

The maritime and air transportation cooperative (CTMA) is much more than a simple carrier: it represents a strategic link between the archipelago and the continent, both for residents and for tourism and supply. THE Madeleine II, Put into service in 2021, transports thousands of passengers annually, vehicles, as well as a large volume of goods.

In addition to the 50 % drop in prices for passengers and vehicles, the federal government also eliminates fuel -related surcharge on all subsidized crossing. On the CTMA line, this overload was $ 34 per passenger with vehicle, a substantial economy for frequent travelers and families.

Significant savings and better accessibility

The impact will be particularly significant for Madelinots who must often move for health, studies or logistics reasons. By making the crossing more affordable, Ottawa responds to an urgent demand expressed for several years by the population and local elected officials.

This initiative also affects Bay Ferries (Fundy Rose, between Saint-Jean and Digby) and Northumberland Ferries (between Wood Islands and Caribou). Together, these three companies serve more than 531,000 passengers per year in eastern Canada.

The government has also confirmed financial support to Marine Atlantique, the Crown corporation which serves Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, in order to reduce prices for walking vehicles and passengers by 50 %, while maintaining the current prices for commercial transport.
