Daily life. Booklet A, VAT on energy, Linky counter, taxes … which changes on August 1

Friday, August 1, several reforms will modify the daily newspaper of French households: decrease in regulated savings yields, increase in VAT on energy subscriptions, additional costs for homes without a Linky meter and payment of the back -to -school allowance. Overview of the main developments.

VAT increase on gas and electricity subscriptions

From 1is August, gas and electricity subscriptions will no longer benefit from the reduced VAT rate to 5.5 %. This will increase to 20 % to comply with European law, which imposes a uniform rate. To limit the impact of this increase, the state will reduce the excise (consumption tax). For electricity, it will drop from 33.70 euros/MWh to 29.98 euros/MWh and for gas, it will drop from 17.16 euros/MWh to 15.43 euros/MWh, on the recommendation of the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE). Turpe (network use rate) will also be reduced. The increases should therefore be partly compensated – depending on the level of consumption. However, households are advised to closely monitor their invoice, especially in the event of high consumption.

The price of gas remains stable

Slight lull for the price of gas which remains stable in August. According to the landmarks published by CRE, the kWh of gas for heating will cost 0.10801 euros TTC (against 0.10852 Euro/kWh in July). For hot water and cooking, the price is displayed at 0.13920 Euro incl.

Costs in the absence of a Linky counter

Recalcitrants refusing to install a Linky counter will have to pay additional costs from 1is august. This “tariff component” according to the energy mediator will amount to 6.48 euros every two months. To this can be added 4.14 euros, also every two months, if no statement is transmitted. It remains possible to avoid these costs by transmitting at least one annual index or by accepting a statement.

Decrease in the rate of savings booklets

In August, three booklets will be affected by the recommendations of the Governor of the Banque de France, which ratified the Minister of the Economy Éric Lombard. The rate of booklet A will drop to 1.7 % to August 1ᵉʳ, against 2.4 % currently. It is the biggest fall since 2009. He had already undergone a first decrease of 3 % to 2.4 % on February 1ᵉʳ. The rate of LDDS (sustainable and united development booklet) will also suffer the same fate. This drop is justified by low inflation (0.88 % in the first half of 2025) and follows the formula recommended by the Banque de France.

The rate of the popular savings book (LEP), reserved for modest households, will drop from 3.5 % to 2.7 % (against 2.2 % depending on the regulatory formula) to maintain an attractive return for modest households.
