In the aftermath of the American national holiday, sections of the “approaches” – Democrats abroad – organize manifestations of “resistance”. They stand for example in Japan, Portugal, Greece, and Switzerland; in Zürich and Lausanne.
It was at the foot of the Saint-Laurent church in Lausanne, that a fifteen members of the Aboard DemotoTs gathered on Saturday. The group did not bring starred flags, but signs brandished with slogans like “freedom, equality and justice for all”.
The objective is to alert what is going on at the moment in the United States. They recall that the declaration of independence, celebrated every July 4, led to the creation of the Constitution. A constitution which, according to them, is not respected by the administration of Donald Trump.
Threats to the American Constitution
The objective of this mobilization: alerting to the current situation in the United States. The demonstrators recall that the declaration of independence, celebrated every July 4, led to the creation of the American Constitution – a founding text which would no longer be respected by the administration of Donald Trump.
They cite soil law. The 14ᵉ amendment of the American Constitution guarantees automatic citizenship to anyone born on American soil. However, since his entry into office, the American president has been trying to question this principle, by conditioning the allocation of nationality to certain criteria. If federal judges opposed it, the Supreme Court recently proved them wrong. The law of the soil, as it exists today, could therefore be deeply questioned.
Sacrified education and expelled migrants
Democrats from abroad also denounce what they call “dismantling” of the Department of Education, with the dismissal announced of half of its workforce. They are concerned about the expulsions of migrants without prior audience, made possible by a law of 1798 invoked by Donald Trump to return to Salvador more than 200 men accused of carrying out an “illegal war” against the United States.
They also expressed their anger at the new budgetary law promulgated the day before by the American president. Brandishing signs denouncing a “ugly” – ugly – law – they say they are outraged by the Senate vote. Tax reductions are deemed unfair, and sections in social spending, they say, will penalize millions of citizens.
