The demographic balance of France has changed. The number of births is less than the number of people who died over a year. An unprecedented situation since 1945.
There are now fewer children who are born in France than people who die. According to a study published by INSEE and relayed first by franceinfothe number of deaths has exceeded that of births. A situation that had not arrived since the Second World War.

Over the twelve months which have passed between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025, France had 651,000 deaths against 650,000 births. Thus, for the first time since 1945, the country’s demographic balance is down.
A 10 -year advance on forecasts
In its modeling, INSEE did indeed provide for the number of deaths compared to births, but not before 2035. The decline in the demographic balance therefore occurs 10 years earlier.
