Despite the slippages, Grok wins a big contract with the Pentagon

Grok, the chatbot developed by Xai – Elon Musk’s company – will enter the systems of the American government. The Pentagon has just signed a contract that can reach $ 200 million to use this tool as part of a program called “Grok for Government”. The objective: to propose analysis and decision -making tools, especially in the fields related to national security.

Musk’s AI is the army

Problem: this announcement arrives at the worst moment. A few days earlier, Grok was talking about him for bad reasons. The AI had generated squarely Nazi messages, going so far as to praise Adolf Hitler on X (formerly Twitter). Elon Musk recognized a big failure and accused his chatbot of being ” too obedient » et « Too eager to please ». He promised adjustments that have been put in place quickly, but the evil is made.

Not enough to brake the Pentagon, obviously. The signed contract not only provides access to the latest version of the Bot, Grok 4, but also personalized tools for government services and technical support for classified environments. Other AI giants such as Google, Anthropic and Openai have also obtained similar contracts, also capped at 200 million.

Doug Matty, in charge of digital and artificial intelligence within the US Ministry of Defense, sums up the logic: “ AI changes the situation for our operations and our strategic superiority ».

This contract also falls in full scramble between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. The billionaire had however bet in the president’s election in 2024: $ 250 million invested in his campaign, very noisy public support, and even a position in the Doge agency (for Department of Government Efficiency), supposed to reduce state spending.

But since then everything has changed. Elon Musk has distanced himself from Donald Trump’s fiscal policy, including his “Big Beautiful Bill”, which he considers too expensive for taxpayers. He left Doge in May. And since then, the American president no longer chews his words: he has threatened to use DOGE to attack Musk companies … even to expel him from the country, even if he is an American citizen.

Another sensitive point: during his visit to Doge, Elon Musk had direct access to many government data. Enough to feed new concerns, now that XAI is back in the fold of the state with this new contract.
