Died at 16 after a night of waiting in the emergency room: his family is pursuing a hospital in Ontario

An Ontario in the bereaved family of her 16 -year -old son would have decided to continue the hospital where the teenager would have spent his last night in suffering to be seen in the emergency room despite his condition which would have required immediate care.

«[Les employés de l’hôpital rencontrés après le décès] did not say that they were wrong. But they admitted that, if Finlay had been seen earlier, the outcome could have been different, “said Hazel Van der Werken, the mother of the teenager on Saturday, in an interview with Global News.

On February 8, 2024, Finlay Van der Werken did not go to school due to a migraine – a condition that often afflicted him when he was sick, said his mother.

Except that during the day, his condition would have deteriorated until his mother would have made the decision to lead him to the Trafalgar Memorial hospital in Oakville in Ontario.

“I rolled as quickly as possible. […] We entered it. There were so many people. The corridors were crowded. We sat down and Finlay kept crying. He was never crying in pain. He would never have cried if there had not been a real urgency, ”continued his mother to Global News.

During his sorting around 10 p.m., he would have been classified at the second highest level, which means that, in 95% of cases, the patient must be seen within 15 minutes according to the directives, underlined the family lawyer, Meghan Walker, in the English -speaking media.

But it was not until the next day around 6:22 a.m. that he would have been seen by a doctor, who would then have declared that the teenager “suffered from sepsis/pneumonia with hypoxia and that he presented a high risk of acute deterioration”, according to his file consulted by the lawyer.

At that time, his breathing was made so problematic that he had to be intubated and the hospital would have made the decision to transfer him to the Sickkids hospital in Toronto.

It was then that he had suffered from cardiac arrest forcing him to be placed on a heart and respiratory support, but quickly, his care team would have indicated to his parents that his organic function deteriorated too quickly.

“We had to make the decision … to unplug Findlay,” the mother in tears told the English -speaking media. “Or risk that the situation is getting worse and that he wakes up and dies in excruciating suffering,” continued her husband Gj van der Werken by his side. This whole story has only lasted a little more than 24 hours, can be read in its necrological notice.

In his pursuit, the family alleys as well as the healthcare team would not adequately monitor the Finlay condition, and would not have set up the protocols appropriate for their treatment, in addition to not having informed the family of the nature of its state.

For his part, the officials of Halton Healthcare, who serves the Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in Oakville, would have said in writing to note “an increasing number of patients with increasingly complex pathologies and comorbidities, often requiring longer and more intensive care”, according to the Anglophone Media

“This strongly requests our emergency services, the flow of patients, the availability of beds and the experience of patients,” they said, adding to being “deeply committed to providing high quality care and imbalances in the communities that we serve”.
