An official survey was opened on the death of a 5 -year -old child, who died after a serious allergic reaction by eating a cookie in his primary school, even if he was “well aware” of his food and cautious limitations, according to his mother.
“The day Benedict died, our world collapsed […] Benedict was not only an allergic child, he was a whole universe – curious, funny, kind and loving – and the world should have been safer for him, “deplored his mother, Helen Blythe, at the opening of the investigation into his death on Monday at the town hall of Peterborough, in England, according to” The Independent “.
Despite the years that have passed since the death of little Benedict Blythe, 5, on December 1, 2021, the pain did not fade for his mother, who campaigned to protect children suffering from allergies.
She also set up the Benedict Blythe Foundation, who had the Allergy team and the association of independent school scholarships (ISBA) set up an allergy code to guide schools and help them keep children allergic.
That morning, the boy had just opened the first door of his Advent calendar-chocolate without dairy product because of his milk allergies, eggs and certain nuts-before going to his school in Stamford in England, where he would also have consumed a cookie brought from the house, noted the coroner, according to the British media.
The boy would then have started to vomit, and the school would have contacted his parents before bringing him outside to allow him to get some fresh air. It was then that he would have “collapsed”, heard the court.
An adrenaline auto-injector (IAA) was then administered by an education assistant trained in first aid and an attempt at cardiopulmonary resuscitation would have been made in vain: the schoolboy would have died later in the day in the hospital.
According to his mother, vomiting was the “first sign” of an allergic reaction and “the way it was then varied varied,” noted the BBC.
The latter had also informed the school as to the allergies of her son and the way they took place normally, saying herself “reassured by the level of care offered” by the establishment, during her first visits, which had “satisfied” it as to the fact that “the school would be able to face its allergies” if necessary.
The investigation into his death should continue to be aware of the coming weeks.
