Digital services tax | Refunds will be expected

(Ottawa) The Canada Revenue Agency (ARC) indicates that companies that have already paid the digital services tax, now abolished, will have to wait for the adoption of a new law by Ottawa before being able to obtain their reimbursement.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Sunday evening that, in order to relaunch trade negotiations with the United States, Canada abandoned the world’s technology giants.

The first payment was due on Monday and could have cost billions of dollars to American companies like Amazon and Uber.

An arc spokesman said that the agency had already received revenue from the digital services before cancellation by Ottawa, but did not specify an amount.

The deputies are currently on summer vacation and the spokesman said that they will have to adopt a law officially repealing the tax at the start of the parliamentary school so that taxpayers can recover their money.

The CRA has given up the obligation for taxpayers to produce a TPS/HST declaration before the deadline of June 30 and will not request any related payment by then.
