Faced with the increase in prices of several pass to travel by train, a new solution appears advantageous. And this is good news for those who wish to explore Japan without breaking the bank.
Since June 18, the company JR East (East Japan Railway Company) has launched a new pass: the East Japan Nonbiri Tabi, or “East Japan Laid-Back Journey”. A simple, flexible and economical formula to discover a large part of the Japanese archipelago until the end of the year.
A three -day pass to visit certain regions
This new pass gives access to three days of Unlimited journeys on the JR East networkwhich serves the east of the Kanto region (where Tokyo is located), northeast of Tohoku, as well as part of the Chubu region. Concretely, this includes the prefectures of Nagano, Niigata, Yamanashi and Shizuoka. A perfect area for those who want to discover various landscapes between mountains, oceans and thermal sources.
The formula is particularly practical for travelers who wish to leave the capital without moving away from it. It also allows you to go further, up to less touristy regions, but just as magnificent, like Aomori or Akita.
An unbeatable price for travelers
The real highlight of this pass remains its extremely affordable price: Only 9,000 yen (around € 54) for three days of unlimited exploration. Difficult to do better: a simple tokyo-nagano round trip is enough to make the pass profitable. As an example, a tokyo-nikko first leg already costs 2,600 yen, and a Tokyo-Sendai rises to 6,400 yen. In just a few journeys the pass is widely amortized.
This pass is a boon for those who want to discover Japan by train without breaking the bank. Especially since this pass is also valid on certain local fast lines.
An ideal pass to visit eastern Japan
JR East accompanies this launch with some suggestions of routes from Tokyo. Of the Escapades to the Nagano mountainsthe beaches of Niigata or the wild landscapes of Tohoku are among the proposed ideas.
Important point: the pass must be purchased online (on the JR East site or via its partners), and it can be used over three days of your choice between July 1 and December 26, 2025. A perfect opportunity for those who visit Japan this summer or in the fall. You can buy the pass a month before we activate, enough to take the time to organize your journey.
