“Do not touch it”: a “highly toxic and invasive” plant identified in a Walloon town

The datura, a plant from Mexico, was spotted in the commune of Hensies. It is very toxic for both humans and animals, which is why the town launches an alert message.

The commune of Hensies warns its inhabitants: Datura Stramoine, a wild plant from Mexico, was observed along the fields of the entity. Highly toxic and invasive, it represents a danger for both humans and animals.

A dangerous plant to avoid absolutely

The datura contains powerful alkaloids present in all its parts: leaves, flowers, seeds and roots. Their ingestion, even in small quantities, can cause serious health problems, sometimes fatal. The authorities recall that one should in no case touch the plant – in order to avoid the dissemination of its seeds – and above all never consume it.

Recommendations to walkers

The town invites citizens to caution during their walks. In the event of a discovery, it is advisable not to intervene yourself and simply remain vigilant. Hensies broadcast photos of the plant to allow everyone to identify it more easily.

Awaiting suitable management

Pending the implementation of an adapted management strategy, the municipal authorities ask residents to remain attentive and inform those around them. “Be vigilant,” insists the commune in its press release, recalling that the datura, although seeming trivial at first glance, is a real threat to public health.
