A study conducted, among other things, by the High School of Social Work of Lausanne (HETSL) shows that children living in Swiss territory shows that 50% of children two years have never used a digital device, as reported Time. As a reminder, the recommendations are clear: no screen before three years.
The base of the analysis, entitled Swipe, is based on 4,200 parents who answered the researchers’ questions. The data is based on the behavior of children from 0 to 5 years old.
According to the figures of this first national study, the screen time per age and per day is defined as follows:
- 0-1 an: 22 min
- 1-2 years: 19 min
- 2-3 years: 37 min
- 3-4 years: 39 min
- 4-5 years: 42 min
- 5-6 years: 47 min
We then discover that the little ones are too often exposed to screens. Questioned by TimeNevena Dimitrova, associate professor and director of the study, refuses to give in to a form of “moral panic”.
As the investigation points out:
“Access to the screen is mainly motivated by the parents’ learning or availability”
Nevena Dimitrova claims that many parents use screens to be able to have a little time for a household task or offer a calm beach during a long trip by car or train.
Many children devote Listening time
Another factor to note, the time when screens are consumed. “The use of screens takes place mainly in the afternoon, in the morning and before bedtime,” notes the study.
To give some figures:
- in the afternoon (60%);
- in the morning (25%);
- Before going to sleep (22%).
Another particularly interesting aspect is the average use of digital media: it is 1h22 per day and half is devoted to listening, without looking at a screen. The stimulation is better and listening nourishes the imagination of the toddler. Above all, the audio is less likely to create an addiction for the child.
To conclude, the observation is not as bad as it could not suspect it. It is in any case better than in other countries, including the United States, says Nevena Dimitrova. (please)
