Does drinking coffee in the morning make us happier? What science says

People who consume caffeine regularly are generally better. Myth or reality? To find out, researchers from Bielefeld universities in Germany and Warwick in Great Britain followed 236 young adults for almost four weeks. Participants had to fill short questionnaires on their smartphone seven times a day, indicating their mood of the moment and if they had consumed a caffeinated drink in the previous 90 minutes.

The results are unequivocal: the volunteers said they felt significantly happier and more enthusiastic about the mornings where they had consumed coffee. And this compared to the days they had not drunk.

Less sad after drinking coffee

The study also observed links with the reduction of negative emotions such as sadness. After drinking coffee, the participants felt slightly less sad or upset that during comparable days without coffee.

Researchers explain the stimulating effect of caffeine on morning mood by its ability to block adenosine receptors (promoting sleep), which provides a feeling of energy and well-being.

Despite these positive effects, the authors of the study warn against excessive consumption. Caffeine can lead to dependence, and its late consumption during the day can disrupt sleep.
