This reaction of the French president comes after Donald Trump withdrew his country from this UN agency, saying that the “cultural and social causes” of UNESCO are too “divisive” and “WOKE”.
Emmanuel Macron wanted to support UNESCO after the announcement of the United States’s new withdrawal from the United Nations Education, Science and Culture.
“UNESCO unwavering support, universal protector of science, ocean, education, culture and world heritage,” wrote the French president on X.
“The withdrawal of the United States will not weaken our commitment alongside those who have this fight,” added Emmanuel Macron, faced with this new flip-flop from Donald Trump to the UN agency.
Causes deemed too much “woke” by Donald Trump
By announcing their new withdrawal from UNESCO, the United States has notably accused the organization of promoting “divisive” causes.
Donald Trump also judged “the cultural and social causes” of UNESCO too “WOKE”. The American president had already withdrawn his UNESCO country in 2017, during his first accession to the White House.
“This president will always pass America first and will ensure that our country’s membership of all international organizations is in accordance with our national interests,” said Anna Kelly, the deputy spokesperson for the White House to justify the choice of its president, said a little earlier.
For its part, Unesco said on X that this announcement of the United States “had been anticipated”, although it was “regrettable”.
If Emmanuel Macron has decided to support UNESCO, the Israeli government seems, in contrast, delighted with this decision taken by the republican billionaire. The Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister welcomed the decision of the United States on Tuesday, thanking them for their “moral support”.
“This is a necessary measure, intended to promote justice and the right of Israel to fair treatment within the United Nations system, a right which has often been flouted due to the politicization of this body,” said Gideon Saar on X.
