More than 50 people lost their lives on Tuesday in the western province of Herat in Afghanistan, following a collision involving a truck, a motorcycle and a vehicle carrying migrants returning from Iran, according to information communicated by the police.
“Due to excessive speed and negligence, (the bus) has left the main road and collided violently with a truck in the province of Hérat,” the police said.
The bus was carrying Afghans recently returned from Iran and went to the Kabul capital, a provincial official for AFP, as part of a massive wave of expulsions in recent months, told the capital.
Police from the Guzara district, outside the city of Herat where the accident occurred, said that a motorcycle was also involved in the accident.
The majority of the victims were on the bus, two people traveling in the truck were killed, as well as the two passengers of the motorcycle.
Road accidents are frequent in Afghanistan, partly because of the poor condition of the roads after decades of conflict, the dangerous driving of motorists and the lack of regulation.
In December, two bus accidents involving a tanker truck and a truck on a highway crossing the center of the country left at least 52 dead.
