August 1, 2025 will mark a new step in increasing energy costs for French households. Why such an increase in the gas bill on August 1, 2025?
The reason for this increase is purely fiscal. It stems from a European directive which requires France to apply a single VAT rate on the same energy product. Until now, gas subscription benefited from a rate reduced to 5.5 %, while consumption was taxed at 20 %.
To comply, the government has chosen to align the VAT of the subscription to the highest rate. From August 1, 2025, VAT on the fixed share of your bill will therefore increase to 20 %. To amortize this shock, a drop in the excise on the gas (one of the taxes on consumption) was planned.
