As a result, companies will now be forced to inform customers in a very clear way, and regardless of the channel, that a subscription will be extended. This should be done no later than 15 days before renewal and it will be valid for both monthly and quarterly or annual types, for example. In addition, consumers should be able to choose to terminate it immediately and easily when receiving the message.
No fine for isolated cases
Rob Beenders, however, specifies on the Flemish daily newspaper in the event of non-compliance, no fine will be imposed for isolated cases. On the other hand, this law is well aimed at large companies that are pioneers in this area and fines could reach “several thousand euros depending on the case”.
Make a highlight: Belgium becomes the first European country to adopt such a measure and the minister welcomes it. “Companies have exercised a lot of lobbying to make this project fail. But we have not taken into account in Belgium. We hope that our country will serve as a pioneer and inspire other states to adopt similar legislation. This is an important advance to protect the purchasing power of consumers.”
For its application, the new law will come into force 12 months after its publication in the Belgian instructor.
