Last year, the consumption of beef in Switzerland believed 1.9%, that of pork of 0.9%, chicken of 8.1%and seafood of 2%, according to figures from the Proviande rake relayed Tuesday by Bell.
In total, some 470,400 tonnes of meat were swallowed up, against another 381,000 in 2000. These figures do not include meat bought outside Switzerland as part of purchasing tourism.
The coop subsidiary was able to gain market share in the first part of the year and growth is expected to continue in the second half, said Managing Director Marco Tschanz at a press conference on the sidelines of the Rhénan group.
Faced with growing demand, Switzerland must import meat, local production is not progressing. Imports of beef from the United States, as evaluated in the context of customs duties between Berne and Washington, would not solve the problem. According to Bell’s boss, “the Swiss consumer observes a reservoir vis-Ã -vis American beef”, in particular due to the use of antibiotics and the well-being of the animal.
