Gaza: at least 22 dead in Israeli attacks

Keystone-SDA

The civil defense in the Gaza Strip reported at least 22 people killed on Monday in new Israeli bombings on Palestinian territory ravaged and hungry by 21 months of war.

(Keystone-ATS) According to the spokesperson for this first aid organization, Mahmoud Bassal, 10 Palestinians were killed in three attacks in Israel in different districts of the city of Gaza (North) and 12 died in other bombings in the Khan Younès (South) area.

Questioned by AFP, the Israeli army did not immediately comment on this information, but it indicated in a press release that the Israeli forces had destroyed “buildings and terrorist infrastructure” used by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the districts of Choujaiya and Zeitoun, in the city of Gaza.

Impasse negotiations

These new bombings arise while the indirect negotiations between Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement on a cease-fire and a release of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip are in a dead end.

The two camps accuse each other of stopping these talks launched on July 6 in Doha through Qatar, Egypt and the United States, to end the devastating war triggered by the attack on Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023, the last episode of the very long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The armed branch of Islamic jihad (the al-qods brigades) which fought alongside Hamas in Gaza, broadcast on Monday showing her fighters pulling missiles on a command and control center of the Israeli army near Choujaiya.

Media prevented from working by Israel

Given the restrictions imposed on the media by Israel, which besieged the Gaza Strip, and the difficulties of access to the field, AFP is not able to independently check the balance sheets and assertions of the different parties.

The vast majority of more than two million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip have been moved at least once since the start of the war, which caused a humanitarian disaster in the Palestinian territory.
