Geneva: 391 trees planted since fall

The service of green spaces (Seve) in the city of Geneva continued the planting of trees. Since last fall, 391 specimens have been planted, while 215 had been killed the previous year. If the authorities’ objective to replant three trees for each slaughter could not “be fully reached” during the last season, the balance sheet of the last legislature “was carried out at satisfaction”, indicates the Department of Finance, Environment and Housing (DFEL): 2900 new trees are around the city for around 1050 slaughter.

Last winter, 20% of the trees were planted in the streets and 65% in the parks. The remaining 15% is located in schools, sports centers and private plots of the city. In total, 121 species and varieties of trees, including many oaks, maple and pines, were planted.

However, explains the DFEL, with the acceleration of plantations (four times more than during the previous legislature), “the green spaces were strongly asked and the areas available, already few beforehand, are dried up.” Despite this, “the Seve will continue to do everything to find available plots and develop new projects in order to increase the canopy rate and reduce heat islands, assures Mayor Alfonso Gomez, in charge of the DFEL. For this, the effort will now have to focus on the roads ”.
