Geneva police: 143 surveys opened by police police in 2024

In Geneva, there is a unique service in Switzerland: the General Inspectorate of Services (IGS). This police force is responsible for conducting criminal investigations that target collaborators from the cantonal police, municipal police or the Cantonal Detention Office (OCD). Administratively attached to the police commander, the IGS ensures, in its own words, “a treatment of situations entrusted to it with impartiality and objectivity”. In an activity report published Thursday, she indicates that in 2024, she recorded an increase of 10.9% of new surveys. Or 143 cases open against 129 in 2023.

Most of these cases concern allegations of abusive use of force or a means of constraint even if the number of new surveys for this reason is slightly decreased (-3.7%). “Of the 52 cases identified, there are 42 cases concerning the cantonal police, 10 cases concerning the OCD and 0 cases concerning municipal police as well as other services,” explains the IGS. If the new surveys relating to the violation of the secrecy of function are decreasing, those for suspicion of corruption are increasing (10 in 2024).
