Google works on a smart voice box for its pixel smartphones. In addition to taking the voice message, the AI will be responsible for transcribing them in real time, and even summarizing them, as a real receptionist.
More and more people, in particular adolescents and young adults from generation Z, no longer respond to the phone, especially if it is an unknown number. In question: the multiplication of telephone scams and a form of social anxiety. Also, in the event of an important call, the correspondents have no choice but to leave a voice message, hoping that this will be enough for them to be recalled.
To facilitate exchanges, Google is developing a new function for voicemail of its Pixel smartphones. Our colleagues from Android Authority have indeed discovered, in the Beta 184.0.0.785204977. Applicated Call Message version which would make it possible to take the voice messages of missed or refused calls, and to transcribe them in real time, and even summarize them. A kind of equivalent to live Voicemail on the iPhone, but better.
Call Message: When AI becomes a personal receptionist
The operation of call message, also called beesly in the application code, is simple. If someone calls you and you do not answer, whether by directly refusing the call or by not dropping out, your smartphone will ask them to leave a message. So far, nothing new. Where Google innovates is that AI – certainly Gemini Nano – then takes care of transcribing the message in question. You will then have the choice to consult the audio, the summary and the transcription in the “recent” tab of the telephone application. A notification will confirm that AI is taking a message. The entire process takes place locally on your device, because the function does not use Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Please note, since call message is powered by a local AI model on the smartphone, compatible devices will necessarily be limited. And for good reason, the mobiles with a processor capable of running an AI locally, without relying on a service connected to the cloud are still quite rare. It is even likely that, at first, this a function is reserved exclusively for Google Pixel 10, which will be revealed on August 20, especially since the function seems to be based on Gemini Nano.
But as is often the case with Google’s innovations – we think for example of the famous function surrounds to look for -, it is quite possible that Call Message is then integrated into older pixels, or even a future update of Android or the telephone app, and that it thus becomes accessible to all ELS Android compatible smartphones.
