Here are the secrets of Samsung to create an ultra fine foldable smartphone

A senior Samsung official explains the technical details that made the Galaxy Z Fold 7 particularly fine.

It is a feat. Whether we adhere to it or not, it is indeed a technological feat that we are witnessing with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 (which we tested). Carrying out an ultra fine foldable smartphone is a particularly complex technical challenge.

Please note, the Korean manufacturer is certainly not the only one on the niche. Competitors also bet on the same shock argument, particularly Honor and his Magic V5.

However, on the sidelines of the presentation of Fold 7, we were able to chat with Minseok Kang, manager of the Product Planning smartphone branch within Samsung. The latter highlights many numbers and some technical explanations to realize the important generational jump that is adding up the previous six models in the range.

The hinge in the heart of everything

Hold on, Minseok Kang is not stingy in figures since he wants to highlight the work of orfree of the group engineers. Thus, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 48 % finer than the very first Fold while the new hinge, called “Armor Flexhinge” is both 27 % finer and 43 % lighter than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

The hinge is also the element on which Samsung has concentrated the most. His secret lies in a deep architectural overhaul that it would be difficult to simply explain with words. Fortunately, Minseok Kang provides a video scheme showing the internal developments made to this location.

With this video, we first note a reduction and a global simplification of the hinge structure on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Also, and that is the most important, the two internal plates allowing the rotation of the two halves of the internal screen during folding and deployment were reworked.

In red, on the Galaxy Z Fold 6, we see two relatively large plates just below the screen. On the Galaxy Z Fold 7, in blue, we can see that the two plates in question are much smaller, shorter and are accompanied by a third element in the center.

A more fragmented approach allowing not only to gain precious millimeters, but also to improve the distribution of roles of each component. On Fold 6, the two plates provided both screen support (for its good resistance) and opening and closing movements.

On Fold 7, the two smaller plates are largely (but not completely) discharged from the support role by the third brick added to the middle and mainly serve rotation.

This change not only eliminates the unnecessary volume, but also to strengthen the stability of the structure and increase the flexibility of the hinge.

Figures in all directions

This set also makes it possible to make room for the fold of water drop now 23 % more rounded. That, the more the thickening of the ultra fine glass layer of 50 % (UTG for ultra Thing Glass) on the screen makes it possible to considerably reduce the fold in the middle of the large slab of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

This UTG layer is therefore the only thing to see its dimensions grow, but it is notably due to the fact that all other optimizations give it enough space. In its entirety, the screen is finer of 39 %.

To finish on the screen, it is also interesting to know that everything below the different layers that make up the internal slab of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 there is a kind of “net”.

This net has so far been made up of carbon fiber. On Fold 7, this reticular layer opts for titanium. A change of material which contributes to the refinement of the smartphone (up to 23 %) and, above all, improves pressure resistance and strengthens the robustness by 64 %.

Each detail counts

Pfiou, it makes them percentages! And it’s not over, since Minseok Kang also talks about an 18 % reduction in the protuberance of the photo module on the back.

An interesting detail vis-Ć -vis the competitor Honor Magic V5 whose rear photo block almost roughly exceeds the rear (but has a better photo configuration on the paper).

It is in any case interesting to see the panoply of details that engineers must think behind the scenes to succeed in refining a smartphone and especially a foldable smartphone.

This allows you to better realize the technical challenges animating the R&D teams of a giant like Samsung.

Let us recall in passing that, during this same exchange, Minseok Kang also promised us “soon” news from a Trifold model, spoke of the future of S Pen and explained to Samsung’s position on carbon silicon batteries.
