Some animals also suffer from heat. Adapted water points can help them.Image: www.imago-images.de
Several days beyond 30 degrees, and not really fresh air in sight. Switzerland continues to sweat. And wild animals do not escape it. Here’s how to help them live the heat wave better.

While humans favor air -conditioned parts, altitude or swimming to cool off, animals are not so lucky. They feel as much as we wave of heat, but there are some simple ways to relieve them.
Pro Natura begins by recalling the importance of water for the survival of animals. And it is precisely during the dry and warm phases that the water points can disappear. The ideal place for drinking and swimming must however meet certain criteria:
- Type: Give up bins with high edges and prefer a saucer for plants or a plate, for example. By adding stones, insects can land there and avoid drowning. The bees, on the other hand, like the sweet water which gives them a boost.
- Emplacement: Place the tank at a clear place for all the fauna, birds as hedgehogs. It must be in parallel that they can take refuge quickly if a cat approaches. Be careful not to place it too close to a bush or any other element where predators could hide by watching for their prey.
- Cleanliness: To limit the spread of diseases, water should be changed every day, recommends Stefan Bachmann, media manager of Bird Life Switzerland.
Watch out for rainwater swimming pools and recovery
In certain situations, however, water can also become a deadly danger. The barrels should be covered for rain and swimming pools, as animals can fall into their desperate quest to drink, recalls Pro Natura. The four -legged association has also already warned of this problem. That can be resolved with a cover cover, outing “outlets” or a fence.
Also pay attention to large bodies of water. It is precisely when a crowd of people give in to the call of swimming that it can disturb wild animals. In some areas, it is therefore forbidden to swim near the banks. These areas are reported.
Even in the forest, where the heat is a little better supported, animals need their spaces. Pro Natura therefore advises staying on the paths and not entering the calm areas where the fauna is withdrawn during the hot hours of the day.
Like humans, animals also seek their shade. You can help them by planting shrubs, hedges or amassing branches. This will prevent the ground, a source of food from many species, from drying out too quickly. Finally, do not cut hedges and herbaceous borders.
Animals don’t all equal
Most birds actually have less trouble with heat than other living beings. “To reach a source, they easily travel long distances while flying,” explains Stefan Bachmann. He advises against nourishing them because the feeders can also transmit diseases.
But even if many birds are going through the heat period without too many problems, nothing prevents you from staying attentive:
“The heat impacts the nests which are in direct sunlight or in a nestle that heats a lot”
Stefan Bachmann, media manager of Bird Life Switzerland.

The heat can become such that the chicks end up jumping even before they can fly:
“There is no point in putting them back in the nest. On the other hand, they must be brought to a care center ”.
Stefan Bachmann, media manager of Bird Life Switzerland.
But little ones can also fall for other reasons. Then try to put them back in the nest. This is only worth if they have no feathers yet And do not get up for themselves. Otherwise, leave the chick at a maximum of five meters in a hedge, where his parents can find him. Bird Life strongly advises against farm by humans. If in doubt, contact a specialized center there too.
