Belgian households pay 126 euros too much in fixed costs each month, reveals a study by the Peasy comparison platform in collaboration with the profactive design office. This survey, carried out with 2,000 Belgians, highlights an annual shortfall of more than 1,500 euros per household, mainly linked to a lack of comparison of contracts.
On average, a Belgian household devotes 1,672.09 euros per month to its fixed expenses, including energy, telecommunications, insurance and mortgage loans. However, by opting for the best offers available on the market, this invoice could be reduced to 1,545.69 euros, according to data from Peasy customers.
“Compared regularly his contracts is really paying, but we do it too little. This is mainly due to ease. The Belgian is generally very faithful to his energy supplier, his insurer or his telecom operator, thus becoming involuntarily a sleeping client”David Groups, CEO the Peasy.
This inertia has a significant cost, all the more worrying in a tense economic context. The latest figures from the National Bank show that almost one in two Belgian failed to save in 2022. The outbreak of inflation prices has only accentuated this difficulty in putting money aside.
“Dynamic” electricity rates arrive in Brussels and Wallonia: price differences, within the same day, can be gigantic
According to Peasy, this trend is also explained by a cultural and digital delay. “”Our country clearly missed the check of digital comparison platforms in the early 2000s. In neighboring countries, these platforms have long been well established, which pushes consumers to automatically make a small comparison before taking out a contract. Compared to our neighbors, the Belgians are really the worst students “Constate David Geerts.
Comparison of average monthly costs
Product | Average monthly cost per Belgian | Average monthly cost after comparison |
---|---|---|
Assurance auto | 66,08 € | 50,75 € |
Fire insurance | 37,68 € | 23,18 € |
Balance insurance remaining due | 39,99 € | 31,11 € |
Mortgage | 1273,03 € | 1253 € |
Energy | 159,77 € | 125,58 € |
Telecommunications | 95,53 € | 62,07 € |
TOTAL | 1672,09 € | 1545,69 € |
If the price comparison is common in France, the Netherlands or Germany, it is still little rooted in Belgian habits. Peasy therefore pleads for better awareness so that consumers take more initiative to regularly review their contracts.
