How to convert audio and video files with a simple keyboard shortcut?

Finding the right tool to quickly convert audio and video files is nothing like a sinecure. If there are many online solutions and applications entirely dedicated to this task (such as the excellent handbrake), they are not always easy to take in hand and often require several manipulations.

You must first open the application installed on your PC, or go to the appropriate online service from the browser, import the file, and select the transcoding settings before finally succeeding in launching the conversion. However, there is a very simple solution to set up to quickly convert audio and video files to your PC. So quickly that it will only ask you to use two keyboard shortcuts, and one click. How ? Using Microsoft Powertoys. You may not know it, but the advanced paste “advanced paste module included in the PowerToys, takes on a transfeating function.

Using a simple copy and paste, you can convert video files to MP4 format, but also extract the audio track (or simply convert an audio file) to MP3 format. Here’s how to do it. You can, for example, convert videos in AVI or MOV format to MP4. In the same way, the tool will allow you to convert audio files initially to WAV, OGG, FLAC, etc. into MP3 files, etc.

1. Download the PowerToys

If you haven’t done it yet, start by downloading and installing the Microsoft Powertoys on your PC. This collection of tools developed by Microsoft is free and allows you to add advanced functions to Windows.

2. Copy your multimedia file

Open the Windows file explorer and go to the directory in which the audio or video file you want to convert. Then copy it to the Windows clipboard using the shortcut Ctrl + C. You can also do a Right click on the file and select the option Copier.
