Huge performance for Elise Mertens in Wimbledon

Elise Mertens achieved a superb performance in Wimbledon by eliminating the 13th world Elina Svitolina.

Elise Mertens (WTA 23/ N.24) dominated and defeated the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, 13th in the world and seeded N.14, Friday in the third round of the Wimbledon tournament.

The 29-year-old Limburgeois won 6-1 and 7-6 (7/4) after 1h38 of play.

The Belgian N.1 joins the knockout stages of the simple ladies of the third Grand Slam lift, on the London lawn, as in 2019 and 2022. It is its best performance in Wimbledon. His semi-final at the Australian Open in 2018 is his best high school result to date.

In the round of 16, Elise Mertens will challenge the world’s N.1 La Bélarusse Aryna Sabalenka, her former double partner who beat the British Emma Raducanu (WTA 40) 7-6 (8/6) and 6-4. Sabalenka leads 10-2 in its duels against Mertens.

Elise Mertens (WTA D-19) is also still in the running in the table of the female double. She is associated with the Russian Veronika Kudermatova (WTA D-11) with whom she composes the 8th seeded. On Saturday, they will play their place in the round of 16 against the pair made up of the Czech Marie Bouzkova (WTA D-68) and the Kazakhe Anna Danilina (WTA D-8).
