The customs duties crisis does not do the business of Friedrich Merz. Almost 100 days after taking office, the government of the new chancellor has never been so unpopular.
They are not even a third party to be satisfied with the government’s work: 29% of Germans give it a satisfaction, or ten points less than in July, according to A survey of the public television channel Ard. Conversely, 69% of Germans are not happy with their government.
In detail, Friedrich Merz is considered a chancellor who, unlike his predecessor Olaf Scholz, knows how to communicate. But unlike an Angela Merkel, the Germans give her no competence in crisis management. And crises at the moment, this is not what is missing.

No great success
For example, on the file of customs duties: when the German Chancellor was received by Donald Trump, he staged himself perfectly in the White House and “sold” his visit as a great success. But in fact, there was no particular result.
Admittedly, Germany has not been put to the same regime as Switzerland, but it has not obtained more than other countries. A majority of Germans therefore believe that the style of communication of their chancellor is not convincing.

While Friedrich Merz, during the electoral campaign, had highlighted his career in the private sector, 35% of Germans today believe that he does not sufficiently defend the economic interests of Germany.
Difficult back to school
The start of the school year promises to be as difficult for the Government of Friedrich Merz, because large files await it, with the reform of the social system and in particular the reform of social assistance. The objective is that the state saves money, which is already debated within the government.
The retirement file will also be important. A commission will be set up in the fall to study the main lines of an in -depth reform. Future decisions will certainly not be popular.
