The “worst scenario of famine is underway in the Gaza Strip” due to the intensification of fighting, massive displacements of populations and restrictions on humanitarian aid, according to the IPC (integrated framework of food security) report published on Tuesday.
The humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory ravaged by almost 22 months of war “has reached an alarming and deadly turning point”, underlines this report, the fruit of the work of non-governmental organizations, regional institutions and specialized UN agencies.
Last May, the consortium, which determined the level of food insecurity according to five levels, classified 1.95 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip (93% of the total) in a situation of “crisis” (level 3), including 925,000 in level 4 (emergency) and 244,000 in a disaster situation (level 5). A new encrypted analysis of the situation is underway, indicates the report.
This IPC alert is launched when the United Nations warned against any use of hunger as a weapon of war, and international pressure increases on Israel to end its total Gaza blockade imposed in March.
“The latest data indicates that the famine thresholds have been affected (…) in most of the Gaza Strip,” said the report, according to which “one in three people spend several days without eating anything”.
