To cope with prison overcrowding, the Italian government is considering liberation under strict conditions. A measure that would affect up to 10,000 prisoners.
Rome responds to an unbearable, even explosive situation, marked by frequent revolts in penal establishments.
The detainees concerned are those at the end of the sentence who asked for early release. If the conditions are met, their request will be quickly accepted, especially in the most overloaded prisons. 15,000 places are missing for a total of 61,000 prisoners.
The government also provides for the creation of 1,500 new places this year, with an objective of nearly 10,000 by 2027. The rest will come from the restructuring and the expansion of the more than 200 existing establishments, as well as by the construction of new prisons.
Alternative penalties
At the same time, the Italian executive wants to develop alternative sentences, especially for drug addicts. Those who have not committed serious crimes will be able to avoid prison and be welcomed in therapeutic communities.
Despite these announcements, associations and unions remain cautious. They warn that without in -depth reform, these measures may be only a temporary dressing on a penitentiary system out of breath.
