Sacred stolen places, so much so that they study the establishment of surveillance cameras. This is the reality of certain Jura churches. In the canton, in 2024, 13 flights were reported, reveals “The Jura daily”.
The parish of Courtfaivre underwent two break -ins in a few weeks. First there was the theft of a trunk containing 50 francs, then the burglary of the sacristy to steal custodes, these small containers where the hosts are stored.
Episodes that leave traces. According to “the Jura daily newspaper”, the parish hesitates today to expose the faithful a precious work acquired recently: the prototype behind the realization of the Christian sign, an emblematic white sculpture of the region.
The targeted trunks
Other canton churches have also been victims of burglary. The criminals mainly target trunks – these boxes where donations are deposited. However, the stolen amounts are generally derisory: thieves recover only 50 to 80 francs … On the other hand, the damage caused is considerable: at the parish of Boécourt for example, repairing the damage cost 2,500 francs for only 50 stolen francs.
Faced with this wave of crimes, the parishes of the Jura adopt various strategies. Some install surveillance cameras, such as in Courrendlin or Courtételle. Others choose to take out insurance to protect their works of art. At the Chapel of Vorburg, it is the presence of the faithful who is favored as a means of deterrence.
