Public lighting will be partly extinguished in the municipalities of Neuchâtel, Chaux-de-Fonds and Locle on the night of August 12 to 13. Without light pollution, the population will be able to better observe the sky during the night of the Perseids.
(Keystone-ATS) The swarm of meteors of the Perseids, made up of debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, will reach its peak on the night of August 12 to 13. Dozens of shooting stars will then arise.
As every year, the three cities in the canton of Neuchâtel will encourage their population to turn their eyes to the sky by extending the extinction of public lighting. This initiative also aims to raise awareness of the harmful effects of light pollution, namely the destruction of biodiversity, the disturbance of sleep and the waste of energy, write the three municipalities in a joint press release as well as the Neuchâtel supplier of Viteos energy.
The extinction of public lighting will concern the entire municipality of Locle, including the Brenets. Part of the cities of Chaux-de-Fonds and Neuchâtel as well as localities of Peseux, Corcelles-Cormondrèche and Valangin will be plunged into the dark.
The city of Neuchâtel will organize in the evening a guided walk to discover the wildlife in the region. In partnership with the Neuchâtel company of Astronomy, it will also set up an observation of the moon and shooting stars.
