Air Canada has asked the government to flout the rights of the air Canada under-paid on the charter. The Minister of Employment, Patty Hajdu, waited until a few hours to access this request from the company. The Liberal government invoked article 107 of the Canadian Labor Code to slow down the strike of Air Canada, who fought to end unpaid work and wages of misery.
“The liberals have made a double speech. They said the best place to settle these questions was the negotiating table. They refused to correct this historical injustice by legislative means, “said Wesley Lesosky, president of the Air Canada component of the SCFP.
“Today, while we are at the negotiating table with an obstinate employer, the Liberals violated our right protected by the Charter to have recourse to pressure means and have given Air Canada exactly what she wants: hours and hours of unpaid work on the part of underpaid on-board agent (e), while the company garnered astronomical profits and pays extraordinary remuneration to its Directors. »»
The SCFP appeared at the negotiating table with reasonable proposals and based on reliable data to request a fair salary increase which takes into account the cost of living and the end of the work not paid forced. Air Canada responded by saboto negotiations. The liberal government rewards Air Canada’s refusal to negotiate in good faith by giving it exactly what she wanted.
This reaction is a serious precedent. Contrary to what the Minister said, this will not guarantee the good understanding at Air Canada, but will only widen unresolved problems by putting them back. This will also not guarantee good understanding in the air transport sector, because unpaid work is a unfair practice that affects the entire sector and which will continue to return to negotiations between on -board agent and other airlines.
