Major reduction in the costs for the bridge and the traveler going to the islands of the-Madeleine

The toll duties to cross the Confederation bridge and the costs of the traveler to reach the islands-of-Madeleine by car will be radically reduced, at the cost of $ 100 million in public funds of the federal per year.

From Friday, it will be necessary to pay $ 20 rather than $ 50.25 to drive on the bridge of the Confederation, which links the Prince Edward Island to New Brunswick.

Even more notable, the price for the traveler Madeleine IIwhich commuts between mice, in Prince Edward Island, and the Quai de Cap-aux-Meules, in the islands-de-la-Madeleine, is downright half reduced: it will go from $ 110.50 to $ 55.

For Marc Carney, it is a question of reducing costs for the inhabitants of the Atlantic provinces, for companies and for tourists.

“We will have to make more affordable traveling through this country, for people and for businesses,” he told Prince County, with the famous 12.9 km bridge as a background.

Price reduction will also apply to three other interprovincial trades operated by private companies, but of which Ottawa remains the owner.

The total cost of the measures announced today, promised during the electoral campaign, amounts to around $ 100 million per year.

“It is $ 100 million that will return to the economy, […] which will catalyze investments and will forge deeper links, ”said Mr. Carney.

Opened in 1997, the Confederation Bridge is very important for the Prince-Edouardian economy: according to Ottawa, it served there between 90 and 95% of passenger and goods trafficking from this province populated by 180,000 people.

About 3000 vehicles cross it every day, which represents more than 1 million crossings each year.
