A new, remarkable heat wave affects France and Corsica. Several heat records were broken on Monday, when a dozen departments were on a heat wave.

The thermometer never ceases to climb. A new remarkable heat wave is touching France and Corsica since Friday, August 8. Several heat records were broken in the southern half on Monday, August 11, while Météo-France had placed 12 departments in red vigilance and 41 others in orange.

Temperatures were particularly high in the southwest. A new absolute heat record was set in Bordeaux, with 41.6 ° C recorded on Monday, dethroning the 41.2 ° C identified on July 23, 2019, reports Météo-France. Ancient records also fell, in particular three which had not been exceeded since the heat wave of 2003 in Angoulême (42.1 ° C), Saint-Emilion (41.5 ° C) and Bergerac (42.1 ° C).

Météo-France has also noted, since the start of this heat wave, new records for a month of August. Sunday, the thermometer thus displayed up to 41.4 ° C in Pézenas (Hérault) and 40.9 ° C in Nîmes (Gard). The heat record for a month of August was also broken Monday in Saintes (Charente-Maritime), with 40.8 ° C.

This episode of heat must extend towards the center-east and the northeast during the rest of the week. According to Patrick Galois, forecaster in Météo-France, he should last “At least until August 15 weekend” and could even “No doubt” Extend until August 19 or 20. “The overall episode could last 12 to 14 days”he specifies. With global warming, heat waves are becoming more and more regular, explains Météo-France.

Since the 19th century, the average temperature of the earth has warmed 1.1 ° C. Scientists have established with certainty that this increase is due to human activities, consumers of fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas). This warming, unprecedented by its speed, threatens the future of our societies and biodiversity. But solutions – renewable energies, sobriety, decrease in meat consumption – exist.
