“Mayday, Mayday”: a call for the distress of a pilot forces the emergency landing of a flight from United Airlines

A flight from United Airlines, from Washington International Airport Dulles, in Virginia, had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff following a distress call issued by the pilot.

United Airline flight 108 to Munich, Germany was forced to land urgently on July 25 to “solve a mechanical problem,” the airline at CNN told.

A few minutes after taking off, while he was about 1,500 meters above sea level, the pilot reported an emergency to the air controller.

“Engine failure, left engine. United 108 declares an emergency. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, “said the air controller’s audio recording, according to the American media.

The latter would then have asked the pilot to make a right turn to “return to the field”. “There is no one between you and the field,” he said.

The Boeing 787, transporting 219 passengers and 11 crew members, had taken off around 6:11 p.m. from Washington Dulles airport before turning around and returning two hours later, according to Flightradar24 data.

“The plane landed without incident and all the passengers normally descended to the boarding gate,” confirmed United Airlines, in a press release, obtained by CNN. The flight was then canceled and we organized other transportation methods to take passengers to your destination as soon as possible. ”
