After several confirmed cases in Ottawa, a new case of measles has been identified in Outaouais. The regional public health authorities ask anyone who could have been exposed to carefully monitor their symptoms until the end of the month.
According to the Cisss de l’Outaouais, an infected person stopped on the terrace of a Chelsea establishment on August 9 in the afternoon.
Even if this case is not from the region, it raises concerns due to the strong contagiousness of the disease.
D measles manifests itself in particular by fever, a nasal congestion, cough, conjunctivitis, as well as muscle pain.
A distinctive sign remains the rash in the form of small red pimples appearing first on the face and upper body.
This warning occurs while Ottawa faces an upsurge in cases. The public health of the federal capital is currently investigating a fifth case confirmed since the start of the year.
The Cissso says he is concerned about this proximity, while emphasizing the close collaboration with the Ontarian authorities to follow the situation.
For the moment, the risk for the general population is considered low and no local transmission has been confirmed in Outaouais.
However, the recall remains the same: vaccination remains the best protection against this viral disease.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services also insists on the importance of high vaccination coverage, recalling that to prevent measles from circulating, 95 % of the population must be adequately vaccinated.
