Microsoft MSFT.O launched a new “COPILOT mode” on its Edge browser on Monday which uses artificial intelligence to improve the navigation experience, while the technological giant hastens to compete with its rivals which launch browsers and research functions on the web based on artificial intelligence.
Copilot mode can help do tasks, organize navigation in thematic queries and compare the results of all the open tabs without the user having to switch from one to the other, said Microsoft.
This update comes at a time when technological companies have launched several online research tools with artificial intelligence. Startup Perplexity AI, supported by Nvidia, launched its Comet navigator at the beginning of the month, while Reuters reported the next OPENAI IA browser.
Its googl.o alphabet rival launched the “IA mode” at the start of the year, a search function exclusively based on AI on Google, and reported last week of improvements in user engagement for this type of function.
Microsoft said that, as part of this new feature, users will see a page with a single entry field combining cat, research and web navigation functions. Copilot will also support voice navigation in Edge, added the company.
Users will soon be able to authorize Copilot to access other browser elements, such as user history and identification information, in order to take more concrete measures, such as reservations or manage shopping.
Copilot will only be able to access navigation content if users authorize it, and provide visual signals to indicate to users that it is active in the background, said Microsoft.
The function will be available free of charge on the COPILOT markets of Windows and Mac PCs for a limited time and users can choose to deactivate it in the EDGE settings.
