More bees in the forest thanks to ecological enrichment

The ecological enrichment of forest portions, in particular by developing fully sunny areas, improves the diversity of species. Light promotes the growth of plants that have for example feed wild bees which can thus be deployed more widely.

(Keystone-ATS) The results of the biodiversity development project in the wooded parts of Belpau, a landscaped site on the edge of the AAR between Thoune and Bern, confirm this evolution, notes the canton of Bern.

Two surfaces, one ecologically revalued and the other, were compared. It appears that the number of wild bees is clearly higher on the revalued surface: there is not only a greater number of individuals, but also a greater variety of species.

Of the 311 wild bees identified, 175 (60%) occupied the enriched surface. The difference is more blatant if you count the species: the surface ecologically enriched in 64, 21 more than the other surface. The project will enter its second phase during the winter of 2025/2026.

In Switzerland, there are some 600 different species of bees. Almost half are threatened, especially species nesting in the soil.
