For the first time in 80 years, France has recorded 651,000 deaths for 650,000 births between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025. A trend in the natural balance, the difference between the number of births and that of deaths, already observed in 2023 in the Pays de la Loire region.
Au 1is January 2021, 3,854,000 people resided in the Pays de la Loire, or 5.7 % of the French population, according to INSEE data published in October 2024.
“Population growth, 0.6 % per year between 2015 and 2021, is greater than the French average and classifies the Pays de la Loire in the third rank of metropolitan regions after Corsica and Occitania”, specifies the INSEE.
However, growth in the Pays de la Loire is stretching due to the regular decrease in the surplus of births on deaths (the natural balance).
In 2023, deaths were thus slightly more numerous than births, leading to a negative natural balance when in 2022 it was still positive (+0.12 %).
Regarding fertility, the cyclical indicator “Pass from 1.81 children per woman in 2022 to 1.68 in 2023. Now, the Loire population progresses only due to arrivals in the territory, more numerous than departures”, specifies INSEE in his study.
In the region, this indicator is at the lowest in Loire-Atlantique (1.60), at the highest in Mayenne (1.95).
On the side of life expectancy at birth in the Pays de la Loire, she bounced in 2023, to reach a level higher than that she had in 2019: 80.3 years for men and 86.2 years for women.
